Story/script has a great origin story: originally it was written by the great Barry Windsor Smith - he tabled the story with Marvel. This story comes from copies of the art and script by BWS. (Jim Shooter, editor at the time, has explained the story on his blog)
Barry would then take that script, expand on it and eventually turn into his 'Monsters' graphic novel.
