Now that you're all set, let's get right into this latest issue #4:
Impulse Creations: Red Ronin arrives this issue in all his glory with even deeper ties to his first appearance in Avengers #198-199 than fans might have expected. What was it like for you being able to bring back the giant mech?
JOE CASEY: Let's just say that the nine-year-old me is having an absolute blast, not to mention that his mind is completely blown. It almost didn't happen, but at the last minute it all fell into place and I was able to sequel-ize a story I've always held very near and dear to my heart. Writing comicbooks like this one are why I stick around, expending energy propping up superheroes that I don't own.
IC: Weapon X-Men has focused on classic threats like Baron Strucker and Red Ronin but this issue also has the team run into Agent Lundquist from the adjectiveless X-Men title. Balancing the new and the old feels very natural in this series but has it been a challenge for you as a writer to achieve that balance?
JC: Not at all. It's exactly what I think "Marvel Comics" are all about. That shared universe concept has a lot to do with why a lot of us are still interested in this ridiculous stuff, even after all these years. All of these disparate elements have to comfortably co-exist in order to sell the reality (such as it is) of the whole thing. Despite my reputation, I'm actually a pretty good team player when it comes to presenting a cohesive Marvel Universe. So, yeah, it's easy for me. Almost too easy, sometimes.
IC: Chamber has always seemed a bit like the odd man out in X-titles. He says as much himself in this issue and requires some convincing to stay. Where many teams have a member who’s the leader, the heart, the brute force, the humor, etc., where do you see Chamber fitting in?
JC: Weapon X-Men is a team full of unlikely participants. It's herd to say which role Chamber wants to play, other than the obvious need to truly belong somewhere. Why else would he take so many swings to be on so many X-teams over the years? The messy, physical results of his own mutant abilities leave him fairly isolated, so it always made sense to me that he just wanted to find a situation where he could effectively avoid his own loneliness.
IC: What can you tease us with about next issue’s time-travel adventure?
JC: It's the culmination of Thunderbird's story... one that started in a comicbook that was published way back in 1975. It might be the most jam-packed issue I've written in a long time. Plus, it guest-stars some classic, iconic X-characters in a way you wouldn't expect.
That's a wrap for this issue and we hope you're loving Weapon X-Men as much as we are!
